The University of Texas at El Paso

Welcome to The University of Texas at El Paso! We are delighted that you are interested in this great university.

As you explore our website, you will find that UTEP offers academic and research excellence with innovative programs and services , outstanding faculty, and a university-wide commitment to student success.

UTEP is proud to be well on the way toward becoming the first national research university in the U.S. with a 21st century student demographic. We are successfully transforming this university, pursuing a quest for excellence while strengthening our commitment to access , and thereby creating a new higher education model that is not only working in our setting, but attracting widespread respect and emulation. UTEP boasts many points of pride, including:

  • Increased enrollment. For the seventh consecutive year, UTEP's enrollment has increased. Our 2011 fall semester enrollment exceeded 22,600 students, a new record and a 2.4% increase over last year.
  • Designation as an Emerging Research University. UTEP is ranked third among our seven peer Emerging Research Universities by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Our collective commitment and hard work over the past 20 years has placed UTEP at the forefront of higher education transformation in Texas and nationally. Our progress in becoming one of the nation's most competitive research/doctoral universities has been successfully combined with a strong and sustained commitment to access. We are committed to preparing the next generation of researchers and scholars through such innovative programs as the Center for Space Exploration and Technology Research, Center for Hispanic Health Disparities, Institute of Oral History, the Border Biomedical Research Center, Center for Defense Systems Research, and Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies.
  • Building a bigger, better campus. More than $290 million in construction and renovation projects have been underway on the UTEP campus. The Chemistry and Computer Science Building, Student Recreation Center, and the Health Sciences and Nursing Building lead the latest expansion. No matter where you look on our campus, you'll find a higher education environment that is state-of-the-art, energizing and innovative.
  • Offering top ranked programs. For the second straight year, Hispanic Business Magazine ranked UTEP's MBA program the #1 graduate business program for Hispanics in the U.S., and our graduate programs in Engineering were again ranked among the top ten, for the sixth year in a row.

  • UTEP ranks first nationally in the number of Hispanic graduates in both Nursing and Education. UTEP ranks second among all U.S. colleges and universities in the total number of degrees awarded to Hispanics.
  • Celebrating the achievements of 100,000 alumni. At our May 2011 commencement, UTEP awarded its 100,000th degree. Outstanding UTEP alumni across the world validate the quality of a UTEP education with their amazing accomplishments.
  • Serving as an economic force. UTEP is one of the major economic engines in the Paso del Norte region. We generate $369 million in business volume and contribute to more than 7,050 jobs and $452 million in household income in this region.

Our geographic location, on the border of the United States and Mexico, makes UTEP distinctive. UTEP students live and study in the world's largest bi-national metropolitan area, unlike any other university setting. Despite recent problems in neighboring Juarez, El Paso consistently ranks as one of the safest cities of its size in the U.S.

UTEP shares a rich history with the surrounding region. We were founded in 1914 as the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy, with 27 students and a handful of faculty and staff, to respond to the needs of the mining industry in the region at that time. From this modest beginning, UTEP has grown into a dynamic urban university that serves more than 22,600 students enrolled in 75 bachelor's, 78 master's and 19 doctoral programs. UTEP is recognized nationally for its leadership role in changing the face of U.S. higher education. Our students, who are 78% Hispanic, mirror the population of this region and, increasingly, that of Texas and the United States. UTEP's success in serving as a catalyst for economic development and quality of life in this region has also placed us in the national spotlight as a model 21st century U.S. research university.

We can only give you here a quick glimpse of all that The University of Texas at El Paso has to offer. After your online visit, we invite you to tour our campus and become better acquainted with our people and programs. We'll look forward to sharing with you our excitement at being a part of this very special university. Go Miners!
